Getting to Omata Estate |
Though missionary Samuel Marsden had long been cultivating vines in nearby Kerikeri, it was James Busby – widely regarded as the ‘father’ of the Australian wine industry – that became famous for first beginning a vinery in New Zealand, planting a small vineyard in 1836 near where the Omata Homestead now stands.
Having collected vine stock from Spain and France, Busby first began his plantings in Australia during the 1820s.
In March 1832, however, Busby was appointed ‘British Resident’ of New Zealand, which necessitated a move to the then centre of New Zealand trade and commerce, the Bay of Islands.
Over 160 years later, New Zealand has developed a well-earned reputation for world-class wines, with Omata Estate continuing Busby’s tradition of bold, rich, full-bodied wines.
Reflecting this long regional tradition in its flavours, Omata’s stunning Syrah grows on clay slopes within a stone’s throw of the ocean – the sea breeze maintaining a long and even season. Produced using traditional techniques and careful oak selection, Omata’s rich and powerful Syrah is carefully tended, with low cropping levels and expert canopy management also playing a pivotal role in its quality.
